Michigan State Controversially Upsets No. 1 Michigan in 1990

Michigan State visits Michigan this weekend for a marquee Big Ten matchup. And when the Spartans and Wolverines go at it for state dominance in mid-October, drama usually unfolds.

Take the events of 25 years ago, when No. 1 Michigan hosted 1-2-1 Michigan State. The game came down to the wire, with Michigan down 28-21 and driving with under two minutes left to keep its hopes alive.

Michigan found the end zone on a fade pass from Elvis Grbac to Derrick Alexander. Grbac targeted Desmond Howard on the two-point try when MSU’s Eddie Brown appeared to grab Howard by the leg. He still nearly caught it, but it was incomplete and no pass interference was called.

Michigan State escaped with a controversial 28-27 upset win.
